AV-over-IP: A Buyer's Guide for Enterprise IT Leaders

SDVoE, Dante AV, NDI and JPEG-XS: what each protocol does well, the network you need, and how to avoid lock-in.

Routing video over IP networks is no longer experimental. It is how modern campuses, broadcast facilities and command centres distribute uncompressed and lightly-compressed signals at scale. But the protocol soup is confusing.

SDVoE

Uncompressed 4K60 4:4:4 over 10GbE with sub-frame latency. Best for video walls, broadcast monitoring and mission-critical control rooms. Demands a managed 10G fabric.

Dante AV-H / AV-A

Audinate's blend of Dante audio with H.264/JPEG2000 video. Easier on the network (1GbE viable) and a natural fit where Dante audio already lives.

NDI

Soft-coded, runs on standard IT infrastructure. Beloved in production and live events; less suited to deterministic enterprise rollouts because of variable bandwidth.

JPEG-XS

Mezzanine-grade visually lossless compression at very low latency. Increasingly the choice for KVM-over-IP and broadcast contribution.

Avoiding lock-in

Specify open standards (IPMX is on the horizon), insist on multi-vendor interoperability tests during commissioning, and design the IP fabric for AV from day one. VLAN segmentation, PTP timing and PIM-SM multicast routing are not afterthoughts.
